information about logos
Logo n.
A name, symbol, or trademark designed for easy and definite recognition,
especially one borne on a single printing plate or piece of type.
This is what the dictionary has to say about the word Logo. There is
actually a little more to it though, in the business world. There is a
difference between a logo, an emblem, and a trademark.
Coca-Cola’s logo is their name in a special font, white on a red
background that is very easily recognizable. This is called a logotype.
The Cingular logo, however, is an emblem. A good way to tell the
difference is to imagine how it would look on a flag. Would the Nike
“Swish” look like a legitimate flag? Probably, so it would be an emblem.
Would the symbol for Old Spice? Conceivably, yes, so it would also be
considered an emblem. HP, however, uses simply 2 letters in a font, and
would be considered a logotype. It would look kind of strange on a flag.
When a logo is unique, memorable, and easily distinguishable form it’s
competitors, you have something going. If it’s representing a brand with
a good reputation, and an image, then you probably have a successful
marketing strategy.
